When King Khaled, may God have mercy on him, noticed the difficulties that Saudi citizens were facing while traveling abroad to receive medical and surgical treatment for ophthalmic diseases, God's mercy, he realized his country’s need for an integrated medical center for treatment and research specializing in ophthalmology. In the late seventies, King Khalid, may God have mercy on him, and his cabinet ministers put forward the idea of establishing an ophthalmology center that would serve the entire Middle East region, and in August of 1979 a royal order was issued to build King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital, which rose to rank among the best hospitals in the world.
